Paint Protection
Paint Protection Film in Los Angeles: Complete Buyer's Guide (2026)
Everything you need to know before buying PPF in LA — brands, installation, coverage options, pricing, warranties, and how to choose a certified installer.

Paint Protection Film (PPF) is the single most effective investment you can make to preserve your vehicle's paint. But with prices ranging from $1,500 to $12,000 and dozens of brands and installers in Los Angeles, knowing what to buy — and from whom — matters enormously. This guide covers everything you need to make a confident decision.
What Is PPF and How Does It Work?
Paint Protection Film is a thermoplastic urethane film — typically 6–8 mils thick (0.006–0.008 inches) — that bonds to your vehicle's painted surfaces and acts as a sacrificial barrier. When a rock chip, bug splatter, or door ding would normally damage your paint, it damages the film instead. The film absorbs the impact, protecting the paint beneath.
Modern premium PPF has two defining features that older films lacked: self-healing technology (elastomeric polymers in the top coat that "remember" their original shape and eliminate surface scratches when exposed to heat) and optical clarity (no yellowing, no orange peel, no detectable haze for 10+ years).
PPF Brand Comparison: XPEL vs. 3M vs. SunTek
XPEL Ultimate Plus — Our Top Recommendation
XPEL is widely considered the gold standard in PPF and is what Leti Auto Works recommends for most vehicles. XPEL Ultimate Plus features:
- Hydrophobic top coat (water and contaminant repellent)
- Industry-leading self-healing properties
- 10-year manufacturer warranty against yellowing, cracking, and peeling
- Available in gloss, matte, and stealth finishes
- XPEL's proprietary DAP software for precise pattern cuts
Pricing: Front-end XPEL from $1,800 · Full vehicle from $5,500 (varies by vehicle size and coverage)
3M Scotchgard Pro Series
3M's film is reliable and widely available, backed by 3M's extensive quality control. The self-healing performance is competitive, though slightly behind XPEL in independent tests. 3M is often a good value choice for budget-conscious buyers who still want brand-name reliability.
- 7-year warranty
- Good clarity, reliable performance
- Widely available nationally — useful for warranty claims if you move
Pricing: Front-end from $1,500 · Full vehicle from $4,500
SunTek Ultra
SunTek Ultra is a premium choice with excellent optical clarity and strong self-healing. It's particularly popular in the color-change (tinted) PPF market with unique finishes not available in other brands.
- 10-year warranty
- Available in multiple color tints for a unique look
- Strong UV resistance
Leti Auto Works Film
We also offer our proprietary Leti Auto Works PPF — a premium film manufactured to our specifications with a 10-year warranty and competitive pricing that makes full-vehicle coverage more accessible for LA drivers.
Coverage Options: What to Protect First
If budget is a consideration, prioritize coverage by rock chip exposure:
- Full front end (most popular) — Full hood, front fenders, front bumper, mirrors, and headlights. This is where 80% of rock chip damage occurs. From $1,500.
- Partial front end — Partial hood and bumper only. Minimum protection. From $800.
- Rocker panels + door edges — Protects against road spray and door dings. Often combined with front-end coverage. From $300 add-on.
- Full vehicle — Complete protection on all painted surfaces. Best for new vehicles, high-value cars, or daily drivers in extreme conditions. From $4,500.
The Installation Process at Leti Auto Works
A proper PPF installation is a multi-day process — never a one-day rush job. Here's what our process looks like:
- Day 1 — Paint prep: Full decontamination wash, clay bar, and paint inspection. Minor swirls and contaminants are corrected before the film is applied to ensure a clean surface.
- Days 1–3 — Film application: Pre-cut panels are applied panel by panel using a slip solution, squeegeed flat, and heat-formed around edges. Film is stretched and tucked into jambs and edges for seamless coverage.
- Final inspection: Every panel inspected under paint lights for bubbles, contamination, lifting edges, and alignment. Any panels that don't meet our standard are replaced.
- Cure time: 48–72 hours cure before washing. We advise on care during the initial cure period.
Caring for Your PPF in Los Angeles
- Wait 7 days after installation before washing
- Hand wash or touchless car wash only — no brushes that can lift edges
- Use pH-neutral soap specifically safe for PPF
- For the self-healing to activate: park in the sun for 20–30 minutes after washing, or use a heat gun briefly over scratched areas
- Apply a ceramic coating booster spray every 6 months to maintain hydrophobic properties
- Avoid harsh chemicals, petroleum-based products, or pressure washing directly at edges
