    Step by step

How an auto insurance claim works in California

From the accident to the keys back in your hand: the seven steps, and what we handle at each one.

    1. Step 1

Report the accident and call us

Call 911 if anyone is hurt, then notify your insurer and call us. We open the claim with you and note the claim number and adjuster contact.

    2. Step 2

      Leti Auto Works takes over

From here you deal with one shop. We run the claim, the adjuster, the repair and the rental, turnkey. If your insurer suggests its own network shop, California Insurance Code §758.5 means it cannot require it, so the car stays with us.

    3. Step 3

We tow it to our shop

Our flatbed brings the car straight to Leti Auto Works from the scene or from where it is parked, free for collision repair clients, 24/7.

    4. Step 4

      Damage inspection and estimate

We photograph and document all damage, write the estimate and meet the adjuster at our shop for the inspection.

    5. Step 5

      Supplements for hidden damage

Damage found after teardown is documented and submitted as a supplement, and we negotiate it with the insurer.

    6. Step 6

      Repair and rental car

Once approved, the repair begins. We coordinate a rental car, and the insurer pays the shop directly; you pay only your deductible.

    7. Step 7

      Diminished value and legal help

If the other driver was at fault, we help document a diminished value claim and can refer you to an accident attorney with no upfront cost.

    Start your claim with us

Call or send a request and we open the claim with you today, then take it from there: the tow, the adjuster, the repair and the rental.

How do I start an insurance claim for vehicle damage?

Step 1: Notify your insurer (or the at-fault driver's insurer) to open a claim. Step 2: Get a claim number. Step 3: Bring your vehicle to us or call us to coordinate towing. Step 4: We contact your adjuster directly, write the estimate, and handle all documentation. Step 5: Approve the repair. Step 6: We complete the work and bill the insurer. Step 7: Pick up your repaired vehicle.

Does my insurance company have to use their preferred shop?

No. Your insurer may recommend its "preferred" or "direct repair" shops, but under California law it cannot require you to use them, and bringing your car to us does not void your coverage or delay payment. We work with all carriers and handle the claim, the repair and the paperwork for you.

Will filing a collision claim raise my insurance rates?

It depends on your policy and who was at fault. If the other driver was at fault, filing against their liability insurance generally doesn't affect your rates. If you file against your own collision coverage, some insurers may increase rates at renewal — though California law limits rate increases for accidents where you're not primarily at fault. Check with your agent for specifics.

What if the insurance settlement isn't enough to cover my repairs?

This is called a supplement claim — and it's common when hidden damage is discovered during disassembly. We document all additional damage photographically, write a supplement, and negotiate directly with your adjuster. We have an established track record of winning fair supplements. You should never pay out-of-pocket for damage the insurer initially missed.

How long does the insurance claim and repair process take?

Insurer acknowledgment typically takes 1–3 business days. Adjuster inspection and estimate approval: 2–5 days. Most repairs are completed in 5–10 business days once approved. Complex structural repairs may take longer. We provide a written timeline after inspection and update you at every milestone. Rental coordination happens in parallel so you're never stranded.

Can I get a rental car while my car is being repaired through insurance?

Yes, if your policy includes rental coverage or the at-fault driver's policy covers it. We coordinate rental car pickup directly from our shop — Enterprise, Hertz, and others have on-call accounts with us. If the other driver was at fault, their liability coverage must provide you a rental at no cost. We handle the billing so you walk out with keys to a rental immediately.

What is a diminished value claim and am I entitled to one?

A diminished value claim compensates you for the residual loss in market value your vehicle suffers even after perfect repairs. If the accident was the other driver's fault, you can file a diminished value claim against their insurer in California. The claim is separate from your repair claim. We provide documentation of repairs to support your diminished value assessment. Claims typically range from $500–$5,000+ depending on vehicle age and value.

Do I pay my deductible to you or to my insurance company?

You pay your deductible directly to us when you pick up your vehicle. Your insurer pays the remainder of the approved repair cost directly to us as well. If the other driver was at fault and their insurer is covering repairs, you typically pay no deductible at all. We'll clarify exactly what you owe (if anything) before any work begins.
