Pacific Coast Highway is both Malibu's main street and its main hazard. Drivers slow suddenly for beach parking, pull out of turnouts and driveways, and make left turns across fast-moving lanes, all on a road shared with cyclists and visitors. Rear-end and side-impact collisions on PCH damage bumpers, doors and quarter panels, and harder hits can move suspension mounts or frame rails, which we straighten before the new panels and paint go on.

The canyon roads — Malibu Canyon, Kanan Dume, Topanga Canyon and Decker — are narrow and winding, with rock walls on one side and drop-offs on the other. Single-car crashes against a guardrail or hillside, rocks in the lane and sideswipes on tight corners are typical here. Getting a damaged car out of a canyon is a job for a flatbed, and for collision clients ours is free.

Coastal sun and salt take a toll on paint, which makes matching harder: the panel next to the repair may have faded from its original shade. We read the existing color with a spectrophotometer, mix by computer and blend the repair into the surrounding panels. Small dings from beach parking lots can often be removed with paintless dent repair, and PPF or ceramic coating can then protect the result from the same conditions.
